This past season, audiences heard Mr. Mitchell in Bach’s B-Minor Mass, St. Matthew Passion, St. John Passion, and Cantata 214, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Die Jahreszeiten, Mozart’s Requiem, Telemann’s Cantata 161, and in recital. Scheduled appearances this season include Bach’s Magnificat, St. Matthew Passion, Actus tragicus, Ein’ feste Burg and B-Minor Mass, Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Die Jahreszeiten, Mozart’s Requiem, Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, Telemann’s Cantata 161, a recording of Mozart masses, and in recital.
Known for his superb musicianship and interpretive skills, Mr. Mitchell is at ease in music of all periods. His brilliant coloratura has prompted several presenters to contract him to sing works typically sung by sopranos, including Bach’s Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen, Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Mozart’s Exultate, jubilate, all to critical acclaim.
Mr. Mitchell accepted his first professional singing engagements at the age of 16. Early training was provided by the renowned Lucille Halfvarson, who provided critical exposure to the professional music environment in Chicago and New York. Mitchell then studied with Robert Long in New York and at Chicago’s Roosevelt University.
His career has taken him across the United States as well as to Austria, Italy, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and other destinations in Europe. He is a soloist at St. John Cantius in Chicago, a member of the professional nine-voice ensemble Chicago A cappella, and divides his time between ensemble and solo engagements. In a recent interview Mitchell was asked specifically about his preparation process and musical delivery of the music he performs. His response: “I have always been, and remain, eternally grateful to have undiluted love and passion for music in my very soul. And I’m so very blessed to have this gift, and ample opportunities to share it. For these reasons, I am rigorously dedicated and ever so meticulous in how I prepare the music so that I truly serve the composer, poet and communicate what I think are their intentions to the audience. Most of all, I am deeply appreciative every time someone comes to hear me and I intend to have them leave with something very special, and uniquely mine, every time.”
A native and current resident of Chicago, Mr. Mitchell is represented exclusively by GKW Creative Management.
